Due to parallel problems of infrastructure, seasonality, and price, Ghana’s urban centers face a perennial shortage of tomatoes during the dry-season months of December through May. To fill the gap, Ghana imports up to 100,000 tons of tomatoes annually from neighboring Burkina Faso – plus significant imports from several other countries. SOLVE is tackling the root issues by constructing low-cost, high-yield tomato farms near cities, which produce food year-round using aquaponics. The first farm, already yielding fruit just outside of Accra, can produce 120 tons of fresh tomatoes per year.
Do you have the next high impact idea to SOLVE urban agriculture problems? Would you like to conduct research on our farm or elsewhere in West Africa? As a research and development firm, we are always looking for consultants, students, and other bright minds to innovate and implement high-yield food production strategies. We are also hiring!
